riding glovesComprehensive Analysis
The word (known since 1295) is descended from the Old Norse þriðing (thridhing or thrithing) meaning a third part (notably of a county) (cf. farthing). The word riding was originally written as thrit/ling or thriding, but the initial th has been absorbed in the final th or t of the words north, south, east and west, by which it was normally preceded. A common misconception holds that the term arose from some association between the size of the district and the distance that can be covered on horseback in a certain amount time. Ridings are originally Scandinavian institutions. In Iceland the third part of a thing which corresponded roughly to an English county was called thrithjungr. However in the mother-country Norway the thrithjungr seems to have been an ecclesiastical division. Since Viking rule, Yorkshire has had three ridings [citation needed], East, North and West, originally each subdivide..." 2) "Gloves" -- As to riding gloves1glovePronunciation: 'gl&v Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Old English glOf; akin to Old Norse glOfi glove 1 a : a covering for the hand having separate sections for each of the fingers and the thumb and often extending part way up the arm b : 1GAUNTLET 1 2 a (1) : a padded leather covering for the hand used in baseball to catch a thrown or batted ball; specifically : one having individual thumb and finger sections usually connected with a lacing or webbing -- compare MITT (2) : fielding ability <he's got a good glove at three positions and can pinch-hit -- Casey Stengel> b : BOXING GLOVE 3 a : 1GAUNTLET 3 b plural : the restraints of civility <the gloves came off for the interview> Pronunciation Symbols
A glove (Middle English from Old English glof) is a type of garment which covers the hand of a human. Gloves have separate sheaths or openings for each finger and the thumb; if there is an opening but no covering sheath for each finger they are called "fingerless gloves". Fingerless gloves with one large opening rather than individual openings for each fingers are sometimes called gauntlets. Gloves which cover the entire hand but do not have separate finger openings or sheaths are called mittens. Mittens are warmer than gloves made of the same material because the extra air inside creates added insulation, and because fingers maintain their warmth better when they are touching. There is also a hybrid of glove and mitten which contains open-ended sheaths for the four fingers (as in a fingerless glove, but not the thumb) and also an additional compartment encapsulating the four fingers as a mitten would. This compartment can be lifted off the fingers and folded back to allow the individual fingers ease of movement and access while the hand remains covered. The usual design is for the mitten cavity to be stitched onto the back of the fingerless glove only, allowing it to be flipped over (normally held back by Velcro or a button) to transform the garment from a mitten to a glove. Gloves can serve to protect and comfort the hands of the wear..."
